Scholarship Offering

AFO offers scholarships of $50 to $1,000 to encourage local high school students of French to deepen their interest in the French language and Francophone cultures during the upcoming school year. The scholarships focus on the areas of giving back, language proficiency, and cultural enrichment. We are here to support impactful French learning experiences that will last a lifetime. Talk with your teacher and parents about this opportunity!

Our Scholarship Program Namesake

In January 2025, our AFO former president, Bernie Duhaime, passed away. In honor of his many contributions to our organization, especially in the area of education, in March of 2025, we officially named our scholarship program the Bernie Duhaime Student Scholarship Program.

Annual Timing

Our scholarship applications open annually in August. The applications close each year on October 15th. The scholarship committee will review all applications between October and November and winners will be notified by the end of the year. Winners will be honored alongside the teacher grant recipients at an event in January of the following year.

How Can Funds Be Used? Packages and Ideas

  • Travel - If your school or organization is planning group travel, our funds can be used towards a portion of those costs.

  • Projects - If you or a group of students are interested in putting together a project to give back to the community, funds can be used towards this. Ideas include helping younger students by facilitating French clubs or events, visiting nursing homes, or putting on events at your school.

  • Cultural Enrichment - If you need funds for supplemental tools for your own study, such as Super DuoLingo or access to French novels.

Eligibility Requirements

• Must be 16 or older by October 15th of the current year.

• Must have completed at least 2 years of high school French.

• Must currently be studying French at an Omaha-area high school (or within a 25-mile radius of Omaha.)

• Must be enrolled in French at the time of selection.

Application Instructions

To be considered, applicants must submit the application form and the essay, and confirm the submission of two letters of recommendation by October 15th.
